Marketing Strategies For Notaries
NOTARIES: Go From "Lost" to Found on the WebPublished July 13, 2026

Many entrepreneurial notaries have invested time, creativity and money into crafting not only their notary business model, but also their business presence on the Internet.
It’s the electronic parallel to nice, eye-catching signage at a bricks-and-mortar office space, with the distinct advantage of reaching an unlimited number of customers browsing the Internet.
Being discoverable on the Internet is an absolute non-negotiable for any business, but the challenge can be tough to address. Maybe your advertising budget is small-to-none. Or, you have no staff to help ensure that someone on the team is regularly keeping your web presence and content continuously fresh and relevant. (Sole proprietor notaries and signing agents, we’re talking to you.)
Left unaddressed, those challenges can keep you permanently lost on the web, except…Google will gladly rescue you. For free.
Enter Google Business Profiles. This service allows users to create a free Business Profile, which also gives them access to the tools they need to “take control of how your free Business Profile appears on Google Search and Maps.”
One online Google product expert1 names these benefits of a Google Business Profile:
1. Without a local business listing, you can’t rank in Google’s “Local Pack,” or appear on Google Maps (see “Local Pack” comments, below).
2. It’s often the first (or only) source of information that a potential customer will use.
3. Your potential customers can take actions that lead to a conversion right from the search engine results page.
4. It brings a variety of user-generated content into one place.
5. It gives you plenty of opportunities to signpost2 content on your website.
6. It’s a useful source for customer insight for your own business (and your competitors’ businesses).
7. It’s used by potential customers to get directions to your business.
8. Its Insights section gives you important information about how people are finding you.
9. It influences Google’s understanding of your business as an ‘entity.’

Users can customize their Google Business Profile with descriptive text, photos, and customer reviews. But that’s not a one-and-done… users have ongoing use of their profile editing tools. That’s such a valuable benefit because, after making the effort to create a Google Business Profile, you must ensure it does its absolute best for you by keeping it refreshed and updated on a regular basis.
To get the most from your Google Business Profile, here are some top tips and practices you’ll need to follow:
1. “Love” Your Google Business Profile. Your Google Business Profile is a key tool you’ll use for local SEO because—as Google itself explains—“it dictates your visibility in Google’s Map Pack and AI Overviews.” Google describes its Map Pack (also called the “Local Pack” or “3-Pack”) as “the highly coveted block of three local business listings and a map that appears at the top of Google search results when you search for a local service or a ‘near me’ query.” (Okay YES, sign me up!)
Too often, web pages and database listings and profiles languish in neglect because their creators don’t set a schedule to regularly refresh their content… be sure to read the “Keep It Fresh” tip below.
2. Unless you’re from another planet, you’re already very familiar with Google’s AI business overviews. They consolidate scattered web information about your business into a single response, resulting in one clear and digestible answer.
More must-do tips from Google include ensuring you complete all sections of your Google profile, especially the really obvious ones such as your business name; your website; your specific geographic service area(s); contact information; and days of operation. Don’t forget to include your business hours plus any special availability (for example, “24-hour availability on weekends.”) Include photos but choose those with care… photos must always be relevant, tasteful and visually informative.
Showing some love to that Google profile can boost your customer views and inquiries very quickly, especially if your hard work has improved your chances of appearing in Google Search and Google Maps.
3. Make sure to list your business in all the top U.S. notary public directories. Strengthen your online presence by listing your business in reputable notary directories. Consistent directory listings improve your local search visibility and can generate valuable backlinks to your website.
A simple web search will show you the top web-based notary public directories. Our full-service website offers an active “find a notary” tool as a member benefit: https://www.asnnotary.org/?form=locator
P.S., what are “backlinks”? In short, they are among your best friends. According to Mailchimp: “Search engines evaluate the quantity and quality of backlinks to determine your website’s search ranking. A backlink essentially acts as a recommendation.” Just be aware that “more” is not “better” if the backlinks are coming from low-quality or spammy websites.
4. No Napping on This… Pay Attention to Your NAP. Ensure that every appearance of your NAP—business name, address and phone number—is identical (i.e., it is consistently worded and correctly spelled) on your website, Google Business Profile, social media accounts, email accounts, online directories, online advertising… everywhere you place online content. Search engines use consistency as a tool to verify your business, making it an essential component of local SEO.
5. Target Location-Specific Keywords: Optimize your website content, page titles, headings, and meta descriptions with keywords that match local search interest. Use phrases such as "Mobile Notary in Tallahassee," "Tallahassee Loan Signing Agent," "Florida Mobile Notary Services," and other location-based keywords your potential clients are likely to search for. According to Ohio State University, page titles are the most critical on-page ranking factor, and the most relevant keywords should be placed on the left. OSU further recommends appending your business name using a “pipe” symbol… for example:
Expert Notary Signing Agent in Tallahassee FL | ABC Notary Public Services, Inc.
→Generate and Respond to Customer Reviews
Consistently earning positive Google reviews tells search engines that your business is trustworthy and relevant to search engines. Encourage satisfied clients to leave detailed reviews that mention the services provided and your location whenever appropriate. Respond professionally to every review, so that you demonstrate engagement and improve your local SEO performance. Be sure to post reviews where you know they will be seen.
→Let Pictures Tell Your Story
Think outside of the “headshot” box. Photos showing your active interaction with teammates and the public are appealing and relatable… especially since the realities of being a notary and performing notarizations are generally a mystery to the general public. Photos showing you interacting with a variety of local business people and types of businesses illustrate that you’re an active participant in the community. If you’re a “mobile” notary, a snapshot of you arriving at an appointment in your car really conveys your engaged work ethic.
Be yourself but also make sure you appear professional in all photos you post on your site. As a very important courtesy, avoid posting photos that would inadvertently create the impression of an endorsement from a customer appearing in it, unless you have obtained the person’s permission to depict them in a photograph on your website.
→Keep it Fresh
Ask Google, “Does Google favor regularly refreshed content,” and you’ll get an “it depends” response.
• For so-called “evergreen” content—topics that do not change rapidly, like most notaries will have on their websites—Google focuses on quality and accuracy. Refreshing and maintaining existing content is highly effective.
• Multiple sources say that you can boost Google “crawl momentum” and improve your search rankings by adding new insights, modern statistics, or updated examples; frequently checking and fixing broken links; refreshing old images; and including a “last updated” date that tells users—and Googlebot (Google’s automated web crawler)—that the page is regularly maintained.
With all these free perks at your fingertips, you don’t have to be a web-presence lone ranger or wonder if you’re taking sensible steps to manage your online visibility and story. If you’re currently on the Web but have no plan for bringing customers to your site, tools like a Google Business Profile can help take you from “lost” to “found.”
