How to Apply to Become a Alabama Notary
Find the contact information for your probate judge within your county, on the website of Alabama Secretary of State: http://sos.alabama.gov/city-county-lookup

Appointing Officer
Alabama notaries are appointed by their probate judge within the various counties. The probate judge then reports to the Secretary of State the name, county, date of issuance and expiration date of each notary appointed and commissioned.

At the discretion of the county probate judge.

Notary Bond Requirement
$25,000 Notary Bond Required

Notary Recordbook (Journal) Requirement
Not Required*

*Effective January 1, 2012 Alabama notaries are no longer required to keep a fair register of all notarial acts.

Notary Seal Requirement
Ink Stamp or Embossing Seal Required

Authorized Duties
• take acknowledgments and proofs (conveyances);
• administer oaths/affirmations;
• protests; and
• such other powers as, according to commercial usage or the laws of this state, as may belong to notaries public (includes making certified copies of register entries ONLY, when required and upon payment of fee.)
