How to Apply to Become an Alabama Notary
Find the contact information for your probate judge within your county, on the website of Alabama Secretary of State: http://sos.alabama.gov/city-county-lookup
Alabama notaries are appointed by their probate judge within the various counties. The probate judge then reports to the Secretary of State the name, county, date of issuance and expiration date of each notary appointed and commissioned.

Notary Education and/or Exam Requirement
Education required, all commission applicants (new, and existing notaries upon renewal) who are not also attorneys.
Notary Bond Requirement
$50,000 Bond Required (4-year term)
Notary Recordbook (Journal) Requirement
Not required.
Notary Seal Requirement
Ink stamp or embossing seal required.
Authorized Duties
• Oaths/affirmations;
• acknowledgments and proofs (conveyances);
• protests;
• such other powers as, according to commercial usage or the laws of this state, such other powers as, according to commercial usage or the laws of this state, may belong to Notaries Public (includes making certified copies of register entries and certifying copies of original documents).
