Illinois Notary Requirements and Information
Illinois Notary Commission Qualifications
Notary applicants must:
be at least 18 years old;
be a resident of the state of Illinois for at least 30 days or a resident of a bordering state that has been employed in Illinois for at least 30 days;
be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien;
not have been convicted of a felony;
be able to read and write the English language; and
not have had a notary commission suspended or revoked within 10 years from the date applying.

4 Year term for a resident.
1 year term for a non-resident.
Notary Education and/or Exam Requirement
Not required.
Notary Bond Requirement
$5,000 Bond Required (4-year term).
Notary Recordbook (Journal) Requirement
Recordbook required, Effective 6-5-2023, for all notarial acts performed by Notaries Public and Electronic Notaries.
Notary Seal Requirement
Ink stamp required. Seal image must be legible; black ink specified.
Authorized Duties
Oaths/affirmations;
take verification upon oath/affirmation;
take acknowledgments and proofs;
witness or attest signatures.
