Louisiana Notary Requirements and Information

Louisiana Notary Commission Qualifications
Notary applicants must:
• be at least 18 years old;
• be a resident citizen or alien of the state;
• be registered to vote in the parish in which he/she is applying;
• be able to read, write and speak English;
• not have been convicted or pardoned of a felony;
• have a high school diploma, a diploma for completion of a home study program approved by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education or a high school equivalency diploma issued after successfully completing the test of General Educational Development.

Appointing Officer
• Governor commissions notaries.
• Secretary of State administers applications, qualifications, examination process and maintains notarial records.

Term of Office
Lifetime Commission.

Notary Education and/or Exam Requirement
Pre-assessment exam and state exam required. Attorneys licensed in Louisiana are exempt from taking the exam.

Notary Bond Requirement
$10,000 Bond or Errors & Omissions Coverage. Renewed every five years. Louisiana attorneys are exempted from the bond or E&O requirement.

Notary Recordbook (Journal) Requirement
Recordbook (journal) required, notarial acts performed on specified instruments involving immovable property and required to be filed/recorded into public records (see R.S. §35:199). Once remote online notarization is operative in Louisiana, an Online Notary Public must maintain electronic records ("copies") of all online notarizations performed, including a recording of each online notarization's audio-video communication session.

Notary Seal Requirement
Not required. The State of Louisiana considers the Notary's signature to be the notarial seal.

Authorized Duties
• Administer oaths/affirmations;
• take acknowledgments;
• certify copies.
• In addition, Louisiana Revised Statutes 35:2 allows Notaries to make inventories, appraisements and partitions; receive wills, make protests, matrimonial contracts, conveyances, and generally, all contracts and instruments of writing; hold family meetings and meetings of creditors; make affidavits of corrections; affix the seals upon the effects of deceased persons and to raise the same.
• Effective 8-1-20, a Notary Public may certify that a tangible copy of an electronic record is an accurate copy. Once remote online notarization is operative in Louisiana, a Remote Online Notary may perform online notarizations for a remotely located individual; document type restrictions will apply.
