New York Notary Requirements and Information

New York Notary Commission Qualifications
Notary applicants must:
• be at least 18 years old;
• be a person of good moral character;
• be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien;
• be a resident of New York or be regularly employed in the state;
• have an equivalent of a common school education;
• not have been convicted of a felony or certain misdemeanors.

Term of Office
4 year term.

Notary Education and/or Exam Requirement
Exam required, applicants for a new (initial) Notary commission. Renewing Notaries must take the exam if commission has lapsed (expired) for more than six months. Attorneys licensed to practice law in New York are exempt from taking the exam.

Not required.

Notary Recordbook (Journal) Requirement
Not required.

Notary Seal Requirement
Not required.
