Rhode Island Notary Requirements and Information
Rhode Island Notary Commission Qualifications
Notary applicants must:
be at least 18 years old;
be a citizen or permanent legal resident of the U.S.;
be a resident of Rhode Island or have a place of employment or practice in the state;
be able to read and write English;
not be disqualified to receive a commission under §42-30.1-16.
demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the powers and duties of a Notary public.

Secretary of State - maintains records, regulates.
Term of Office
4 year term.
Notary Education and/or Exam Requirement
Education course not required. Notary Public applicant must demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the powers and duties pursuant to the requirements of Rhode Islands Notary laws. Secretary of State provides an assessment exam for this purpose.
Notary Bond Requirement
Not required.
Notary Recordbook (Journal) Requirement
Not required.
Notary Seal Requirement
Ink stamp required, paper notarial acts. Notarial certificates are defined as including, among other elements, the Notary's seal.
Official electronic stamp required/specified, electronic notarial acts.
Authorized Duties
Take acknowledgments;
take a verification on oath or affirmation (jurat);
administer oaths and affirmations;
witness or attest a signature;
certify or attest a copy;
issue subpoenas and depose witnesses (individuals with specific expertise);
note protests.
