Tennessee Notary Requirements and Information
Tennessee Notary Commission Qualifications
Notary applicants must:
be at least 18 years old;
be a resident of the state of Tennessee or have regular employment within the state;
be a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident;
not have had a notary commission revoked for official misconduct;
not have had a notary commission revoked or suspended in the state of Tennessee or any other state;
not have been found engaging in the unauthorized practice of law by a court in Tennessee or any other state.

Governor - appoints notaries.
Secretary of State - performs ministerial functions including issuing and maintaining notary records.
Term of Office
4 year term.
Notary Education and/or Exam Requirement
Not required.
Notary Bond Requirement
$10,000 Bond Required (4-year term)
Notary Recordbook (Journal) Requirement
Recordbook (for paper notarial acts) required IF the Notary OR the Notarys employer demands and receives fees for notarial services. All notarial acts must be recorded. The Notarys records may be maintained in a well-bound book or in an appropriate electronic form. Electronic recordbook (journal) required, electronic notarial acts performed by an Online Notary. One or more electronic journals may be used by the Online Notary. Electronic journal record must contain a recording of any video and audio conference that is the basis for identifying the principal in a remote online notarization.
Notary Seal Requirement
Ink stamp required (round), paper notarial acts. Any ink color other than black or yellow; color must appear as black when photocopied on a non-color copier. Seal impression must be photographically reproducible.
Electronic seal required/specified, electronic notarial acts performed by a commissioned Tennessee Online Notary Public.
Authorized Duties
Take acknowledgments;
administer oaths and affirmations;
take affidavits;
take depositions.
A Tennessee Online Notary Public may perform these notarial acts as an online notarization, using communication technology and subject to requirements and limitations in statutes and any administrative rules; and may also certify that a tangible copy of an electronic record is an accurate copy subject to an independent verification requirement.
