Utah Notary Requirements and Information
Utah Notary Commission Qualifications
Notary applicants must:
be at least 18 years old;
be a U.S citizen or have permanent resident status under Section 245 of the Immigration and Nationality Act;
be a resident of the state for 30 days prior to submitting application and must maintain permanent residency thereafter;
be able to read, write and understand English;
submit a mandatory background check.

Term of Office
4 year term.
Notary Education and/or Exam Requirement
Exam required; new and renewing Notaries; exam is administered online at www.notary.utah.gov.
Notary Bond Requirement
$5,000 Bond Required (4-year term). Additional $5,000 bond limits required, Remote Online Notary.
Notary Recordbook (Journal) Requirement
Not required (paper notarial acts). If a Notary maintains a journal for paper notarial acts, it must be chronological, permanently bound, with numbered pages.
A Remote Online Notary shall keep a secure electronic journal of each remote notarization performed, shall record the information specified in statutes, and shall include with the electronic journal an audio and video recording of every remote notarization performed (such recording is neither a public record nor a part of the Remote Online Notarys journal).
Notary Seal Requirement
Ink stamp required, paper notarial acts. Ink stamp must contain purple ink, must be photographically reproducible. Embossing seal allowed ONLY in conjunction with ink stamp; embossment must NOT be inked.
Electronic seal required, electronic notarizations performed by an Online Notary Public. Electronic seal for a remote notarization must be rendered (visually appear) in black.
Authorized Duties
Oaths/affirmations;
execute jurats;
acknowledgments;
witness signatures;
certify copies.
A Utah Remote Online Notary may notarize for a remotely located individual, using communication technology and subject to requirements and limitations in statutes and any administrative rules.
