Utah Notary Requirements and Information

Utah Notary Public Commission Qualifications
Notary applicants must:
• be at least 18 years old;
• Lawfully reside in this state 30 days immediately preceding the filing for notarial commission and maintain permanent residency thereafter.
• Be a U.S citizen or have permanent resident status under Section 245 of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
• Be able to read, write, and understand English.
• Submit an application to the Lieutenant Governor’s office containing no significant misstatement or omission of facts.
• Pass an online exam.

*If a notary maintains a journal, it must be chronological, permanently bound, with numbered pages. Effective 11-1-19, a remote notary shall keep a secure electronic journal of each remote notarization performed, and shall include with the electronic journal an audio and video recording of the performance of every remote notarization performed.

*Purple ink specified. Embossing seal may only be used in conjunction with ink stamp; embossed seal impression must NOT be inked.

Authorized Duties
