Wisconsin Notary Requirements and Information
Wisconsin Notary Commission Qualifications
Notary applicants must:
• be at least 18 years old;
• be a resident of the U.S.;
• have at least an 8th grade education;
• pass the notary exam with at least 90%;
• demonstrate adherence to laws according to the Wisconsin Statutes with regard to arrests and convictions.

Term of Office
4 year term.
Notary Education and/or Exam Requirement
Education – not required to obtain a Notary commission. Exam required, new and renewing Notaries. Training required, Remote Online Notaries (for using communication technology to perform notarial acts, obtained from communication technology providers).
Notary Bond Requirement
$500 Bond Required (4-year term)
Notary Recordbook (Journal) Requirement
• Paper notarial acts - not required. If a Notary maintains a journal, some regulations concerning disposition of such “official records” upon the Notary’s death apply.
• Recording/retention of the audio-visual communications session for every remote online notarization is required, Remote Online Notaries.
Notary Seal Requirement
• Ink stamp or embossing seal required, paper notarial acts. Must be photographically reproducible. Notary may utilize both ink stamp and embossing seal if both device imprints are on file with the Department of Financial Institutions, and the Notary’s name appears exactly the same on both devices.
• Official stamp optional for electronic notarial acts but only if certain specified information is included in the notarial certificate.
Authorized Duties
• Oaths/affirmations;
• verifications upon oath/affirmation;
• acknowledgments;
• witness or attest a signature;
• certify or attest a copy;
• certify that a tangible copy of an electronic record is an accurate copy of the electronic record;
• take depositions;
• note protests.
• A Remote Online Notary may notarize for a remotely located individual, using communication technology and subject to requirements and limitations in statutes and any administrative rules.
